Changing DNS

Here are instructions on how to change the DNS.

Is your device not listed? Search Google for "[your device] change DNS", for example "Firestick change DNS". You will then find a simple guide for your device.

Formuler GTV runs Android TV (with the Google TV interface), so you change the DNS in Android's network settings:

  1. Go to Settings via the gear icon at the top right.
  2. Select Network & Internet.
  3. Select your active network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  4. Tap the pen (Edit) or Advanced.
  5. Under IP settings, change from DHCP to Static.

  8. Optional: enter 1.1.1.1 in DNS 2.
  9. Save the changes and restart the box.

On Apple TV, the DNS can sometimes show as 008.008.008.008. That is exactly the same as 8.8.8.8, only with padding zeros.

Google Chromecast

Chromecast with Google TV (remote control and menus)

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Network & Internet.
  3. Tap your Wi-Fi network.
  4. Select Edit or tap the pencil icon.
  5. Scroll down to IP settings and change to Static.
  6. Fill in:
    • IP address (the same as the assigned one, for example 192.168.1.50)
    • Gateway (for example 192.168.1.1, the router's IP address)
    • DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
    • DNS 2: 1.1.1.1 (optional)
  7. Save the settings.
  8. Restart the device.

Older Chromecast (without Google TV)

On these models it is not possible to change the DNS directly in the Chromecast, as they have no user interface of their own.

Other solutions:

  • Change the DNS in your router. It then applies to every device on the network.
  • Use a VPN router or a Smart DNS service, especially if you want to get around geo-blocking or blocks by your internet provider.

NVIDIA Shield

NVIDIA Shield runs Android TV, so you change the DNS the same way as on other Android TV devices:

  1. Go to Settings from the home screen.
  2. Select Network & Internet.
  3. Select your active network (Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  4. Tap Edit or Advanced settings.
  5. Under IP settings, change from DHCP to Static.
  6. Fill in:
    • IP address, for example 192.168.1.50 (the same as you had with DHCP)
    • Gateway, for example 192.168.1.1 (the same as you had with DHCP)
    • DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
    • DNS 2: 1.1.1.1 (optional)
  7. Save the settings.
  8. Restart the NVIDIA Shield TV.

TiviMate (Android devices)

TiviMate has no DNS settings of its own. You change the DNS directly in your device's network settings. This is how it works on most devices.

General method for Android TV boxes (for example Shield, Firestick with Google TV)

  1. Go to Settings on your device, not in TiviMate.
  2. Select Network & Internet or Wi-Fi/Ethernet.
  3. Tap the network you are connected to.
  4. Select Advanced or Edit.
  5. Change the IP settings to Static.
  6. Fill in:
    • Your current IP address (the same as you had with DHCP)
    • Gateway (the same as you had with DHCP)
    • DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
    • DNS 2: 1.1.1.1 (optional)
  7. Save and restart the device.

Mobile and tablet

If you have problems on your phone or tablet, try downloading and turning on this app:

  1. Download the 1.1.1.1 app (one.one.one.one).
  2. Open the app and turn it on.
